LONDON (AP) Britain's fertility regulator says controversial techniques to create embryos from the DNA of three people "do not appear to be unsafe" even though no one has ever received the treatment, according to a new report released Tuesday.

The report based its conclusion largely on lab tests and some animal experiments and called for further experiments before patients are treated.

It's the same story over at Psycle, the glossy spin studio behind Oxford Circus which due to super high demand has just opened a second branch, also in Canary Wharf. Spots sell out within minutes, as they do at Ten Health Fitness in Mayfair, the studio that keeps half the beauty industry's buttocks high and stomachs tight. Ditto Shadowbox, the boxing studio cum beauty salon in the Flatiron district where, after doing one of the most punishing workouts in the city, you can get a lovely, bouncy blow dry in the changing rooms.

'The Instagram images were all of these really cool, really fit women. They made SBC look more like a private members' club than a fitness class.' Desperate to try it, but aware that classes sold out in minutes, Sarah cornered Bateman at one of SBC's pop up events at Shoreditch House. 'He warned me that the waiting lists were long, so I begged for his email. After a couple of pleading messages he finally let me into one of his classes.'

Amy, a journalist acquaintance, went one step further. Desperate to secure a place at a one off session with renowned yoga instructor Leah Kim at Niketown Oxford Circus, she got smart. 'I got to the store early, hid in a changing room then came out when everyone had filed into the class. When I snuck in, they just thought they'd forgotten to get me a mat.'

To Anya Lahiri, a trainer at Barry's, such antics are a day to day reality: 'It's incredible some of the lengths clients will go to. Despite our no phones policy, you often catch people running on the treadmill while trying to book a class for the following week. One woman even got the Eurostar over from Paris to get to a Barry's class that had a last minute place.'

What on earth's going on? Why are people across the capital rushing out of Monday morning meetings at 11.55am to ensure they're back in front of their computers by noon the time when most of these classes' booking systems go live for the next week? What's driving them to pull the sort of dirty tricks they once saved for getting into chic nightclubs and sample sales?

For one thing, the quality of training you can get today far surpasses the traditional gym classes of old. And it's not just about where you train almost as important is who you train with. You go to Barry's for a session with Anya or Faisal (Ellie Goulding's current fitness guru); you go to Lemon's class at Psycle for a high energy extravaganza and preferably nab bike No 4 on the FROW (front row), slap bang in front of the instructor for all to see; you go to the Bulgari Hotel's Workshop Gymnasium to work out with celebrity trainer Lee Mullins, where you know you're going to get special attention; or head to Mo El Kadey's iHuman Fitness Boom classes at Canary Wharf because, well, no one makes squats and battle ropes quite as much fun as Mo.

But, to hardcore fans, it's not just the quality of workout on offer that makes these classes so attractive. Being fit and healthy is more than a lifestyle choice, it's a status symbol. Think about it: with enough money, anyone can buy an Herms bag (or get a rip off, at least). But arms carefully sculpted by hours of yoga at the same place a supermodel does her downward dogs? That's priceless. And consider the glamour of (potentially) working out alongside an actual celebrity. The last time I was at Barry's I was sprinting next to Paloma Faith; someone else I know had Harry Styles in their class.

As Giles Dean, co founder of 1Rebel in East London, whose garage themed spin classes sell out within hours, puts it: 'London is going through a fitness boom right now. Where you train and with whom says as much about you as the clothes you wear and the music you listen to.' In the same way that a queue outside a bar makes it more appealing, a waiting list adds a certain allure: 'The classes are at such weird times of the day, they seemed more suited to a supermodel than a slave to her desk PR,' says Sarah about her SBC experience. 'But then the fact that I couldn't get there again made it even more bvlgari jewelry replica seductive.'

So, how to get into an It class? My advice: look to the new breed of super workouts hitting the capital, and get in and befriend the trainers before everyone else does. When Oprah Winfrey announced that she would be ending her talk show in 2011 she promised fans that she would be going out with a bang, producing some great shows with the most provocative guests.

Now the Queen of Daytime television is targeting the most sought after man in the news right now, Tiger Woods.

If Tiger does opt for the sit down television interview in an attempt to revamp his image following allegations of affairs and his own admission of "transgressions" in his personal relationships, Winfrey would be the safe bet. He has appeared on her show before and the two are personal friends.

Tiger Woods is like any young person that has fallen from grace. Tiger, should not allow this to define him. The Word of the Lord states that a righteous man shall fall seven times, but when tried and tested, the real deal is to not stay down. He needs to lift his head up high and not let this get him down.

To the nay sayers and the pessimist get a life, it is not you but who knows what challenge you face or will face. Judge that you be not judged.

Elin, I share your pain at this time, it is a difficult thing to face. I know that you feel that your world has come to an end, but trust me it has just begun. Your family is going through a situation that is not unique. Love changes all. Love your husband and prove to others that you are a bigger and better person. That is a wonderful idea, isn it? Smart move, now that the Tiger I remember. I hope his wife is strong enough and gives him the strength and the love he needs to save their family. If he does not get it right this time I am afraid he will lead a very troubled life. I am rooting for him and her! Life is hard and all the money in the world is not going to change that! Although it allows a higher material quality of life, when you have to look your wife in the face and see her pain, your bank account means nothing to you, maybe to her but at that moment, to you it means absolutely nothing! Tiger decision to go on hiatus from golf is brilliant. It creates a story even bigger than the infedelities. It actually dwarfs all of tiger affairs. Now it takes Tiger away from the game that made him the 1 pro athlete in modern times. Tiger apparently is putting himself, his life and his career at the mercy of his wife Ellin. Fascinating move, and he doesn have to visit the throne of Oprah. Yet! Now, the big play is all in Ellin hands. I suspect she have the leash on Tiger for at least six months, evaluate the situation after that. However, I doubt Tiger makes more than a handful of public appearances in 2010. At the height of the dot com boom, when overpaid bankers were hungry to own a Bulgari bauble, bangle or must have watch, the group was valued at more than 4bn (2.7bn). At its nadir, when many potential customers were either out of work or had not received their six figure bonuses, its value fell to a quarter of that.

Small, muscular and tenacious, Trapani enters his office at Bulgari's headquarters in Rome dressed in a well pressed beige corduroy suit. He may be Italian when lunching, but he studied business administration at New York University, and his "obsession" over the past 10 years has been to get Bulgari in shape to compete in a global marketplace.

Trapani is the son of a surgeon and Lia Bulgari, the elder sister of his uncles, Paolo and Nicola. She was paid out for her share of the business some years ago. Lia and her brothers, who are the grandchildren of the group's founder, Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari, were born rich. Paolo and Nicola still own 49.6 per cent of Bulgari and Trapani 4.7 per cent to seal the family's control.

Trapani became chief executive of the group in 1984, aged just 27. However, he abhors the nepotism, apathy and mediocre management of many Italian family owned companies in the luxury market, and says some of them have "lost it big time".

Bulgari, according to Trapani, is a prince among upmarket jewellers, and newcomers into its realm pose no threat. On the contrary, the likes of Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Boucheron (owned by Gucci), Chaumet (part of LVMH) and, not least, De Beers have spent millions on advertising and thus showered stardust over the smaller Bulgari.

"The newcomers have attracted the attention of clients to their branded jewellery. But anyone who wants to spend 70,000 plus on a piece of jewellery will go to an established high end jeweller. Cartier, Tiffany and Bulgari have a position in the market that is difficult to challenge today."

The "distance" between the aura of Bulgari and that of Cartier, three times larger and established in 1847, "is closing", insists Trapani. Just a few steps across Rome's sumptuous Via dei Condotti, which sweeps down from the Spanish Steps, the flagship stores of the two rivals glare at each other.

One of Bulgari's windows boasts a five row necklace of marble sized uncut gems of jelly bean hues. It is part of a lower priced collection called Sassi, meaning "stones" in Italian, which has indeed generated sassy profits. Priced at 26,400, the necklace is an amusing trifle compared with the 500,000 diamond example inside the store.

Yet both pieces typify Bulgari's audacious drop dead glamour in design. They also speak of the house's craftsmanship. Trapani says its "more intelligent" use of precious materials has worked greater "cost efficacy" into the design of its high end jewellery and raised margins without loss of sex appeal.

Sales of Bulgari's jewellery rose 13 per cent last year, to just over 40 bulgari b zero1 ring white gold replica per cent of group total. "At the same time, our designs are less traditional than those of our competitors. We are closer to fashion and to movie stars. He candidly admits that failure to stimulate demand with creative new designs has hit the business in the past. "We work in economies where people are rich. They have everything. They are spoiled and they do not need to buy anything. The only way to convince them to buy something they already have is to offer products so desirable they cannot resist."

Since Trapani became chief executive, more of Bulgari's distinctive, wholly owned stores have opened around the world and the group has diversified into fragrances and silk and leather accessories. The first Bulgari hotel will open in Milan this week; the second is scheduled in Bali next year. These are showcases for the brand, but require insignificant capital and management resources since the Marriott hotel group will run them.

As head of the family firm, Trapani has had to box clever to keep in the good graces of, on the one hand, "the governors", his fastidious and uncompromising uncles, and on the other, the fickle financial community in New York, Milan and London. Bulgari went public on the Milan Stock Exchange in 1995 to finance global expansion. But it remains an intimate private empire.

His grandmother, Leonilde, la Mama of Trapani's uncles, recently passed away, aged 102. She left three sons, not two: the eldest, Gianni, designed the iconic Bulgari Bulgari watch, launched in 1977. But Gianni "e partito", I am told.

Old family feuds may still fester behind the calm, peachy decor of Bulgari's stores, but none may speak of family business but Trapani, and he keeps mum about Uncle Gianni's departure, other than to say: "They do talk to each other now."

The Bulgari brand has long been a byword for glamour. In the 1950s, stars such as Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, fake bvlgari b.zero1 ring Tyrone Power and Kirk Douglas discovered the allure of Bulgari during the era of Fellini's La Dolce Vita. At the height of the 1990s boom, the opening of a second Bulgari store in London was celebrated at a sumptuous candlelit sit down dinner for 250 at Claridge's. The question many ask is: will his uncles, now aged 67 and 63, wait patiently for the next boom? Or is Trapani pushed to polish Bulgari and put it into play? Has he not tired of the day to day grind of keeping this complex business cutting edge and desirable?

He replies: "Look, my uncles are happy to obtain the profit they do. They don't need the money. They are proud to be the owners of this company. Your willingness to keep a business in your hands is much tied up with your perception of the future.

"If you see the company is well managed, and that realistically it will be more valuable, you keep it. In the meantime, you have fun, and you are proud."

What about succession? His three children are all under 10 years old, and his young adult cousins are not in the business. He is beginning to get upset now. "Who cares about succession? I am 47 years old, so who cares? One day, Bulgari is going to be sold, we'll see. But that is not in the plan now and I do not think it will happen in the short term."

"There are a couple of big companies that would be interested, but they have not approached us. At present, I am not bored. I am excited, running like crazy to do all we plan."

Trapani concedes everyone has a price, but says Bulgari would refuse a takeover bid at even a 30 per cent premium, though three times the current price would be a different matter. Meanwhile, he insists: "The momentum is better than in 2000, when we were all exhausted from eight years of strong growth when we were running to keep up.

"Now we are running like crazy to do all the things we have in mind and the results are coming. We are well positioned now, ready to take full advantage of recovery. People, whether in the old economy or new, will pay high prices for high quality services and products. What has changed is crazy excess has gone."

Luxury goods feel chill of recession

Luxury has lost its lustre. As fashionistas become recessionistas and their appetite for 10,000 python skin handbags and glitzy watches wanes, companies making and selling top name brands are anticipating a miserable Christmas.

'The third quarter has been much tougher and things have got even worse in the last month.' says Dennis Weber, a luxury goods analyst at Dresdner Kleinwort. 'We expect the downward trend to continue into Christmas the key time for these brands with no letup in the new year.'

Milton Pedraza, chief executive of industry research group the Luxury Institute, concurs. 'I think we're going to see a lot more pain through the holiday season,' he says.

Trading next year is expected to be no better. Consultancy firm Bain Co forecasts the luxury goods market will contract by up to 7% in 2009, the first time the sector will have recorded an annual replica bvlgari jewelry sales decline since Bain began tracking it in the early 1990s. The most bearish forecasts see sales in developed markets retreating to 2005 levels.

This represents a sea change. Only a few months ago, industry executives still spieled out a well rehearsed mantra: the sector seemed immune to the global downturn. Meanwhile, Cacharel, Donna Karan and Vera Wang have all cancelled next February's catwalk shows in the world's fashion capitals, leaving the autumn/winter season missing some of its stalwart names.

So what changed? Industry insiders point to the 'Lehman effect' as key to the dramatic slide in sales in the US, which remains the world's biggest market for luxury goods.

'Luxury consumers were shellshocked,' Pedraza says of the investment bank's collapse. This is borne out by the experiences of a leading fashion brand, where one of the top brass says sales dived 40% in its stateside stores on the day of Lehman Brothers' demise. The recovery since then, he said, has been slow.

Even more important than the plunging value of the elite's shares portfolios to their spending behaviour is the gloomy mood. 'What sets these brands apart is that they need a feelgood factor for people to keep spending,' Weber acknowledges.

Conspicuous spending fell out of fashion as markets plummeted. Boasting about your Balenciaga and parading your Prada suddenly seemed distasteful given the economic climate. Bridget Cosgrave, the fashion and buying director of Notting Hill boutique Matches noticed the shift: 'There was an overnight change, a reversion from obvious spending.'

So which businesses are best placed to cope with the change? 'I expect companies with very established brand names to fare best: old, high end brands,' Weber says. 'Herms, for example, is much better placed than Burberry, which targets the mass market.'

The British fashion house is likely to be hit hard. Like for likes sales turned negative in October and the group announced plans to cut costs, a risky strategy given the reliance of luxury businesses on maintaining an opulent image. Analysts warn that as a late entrant in emerging markets, its position there is much less secure than that of many of its rivals.

In general, ultra wealthy consumers in Dubai, Moscow, Beijing and Shanghai have acted as a buffer of growth for many luxury players in recent years. Emerging markets are forecast to continue growing next year, albeit much more slowly. But with sales in developed markets expected to go to hell in a handbag, these are only small comforts. As the credit crunch is felt by even the highest echelons of society, it seems even this glamorous elite have realised they can do without many of life's luxuries.

Price is one answer but it is far from the only answer. 'People are buying quieter things but they reek quality. These are things you have to be fashion savvy to recognise. But it's hard to say whether this is a cyclical fashion thing or a reflection of the economic times. There is a slightly more austere and serious colour palette and I suppose the return of the trouser might reflect the mood.

'We're selling lots of leather, cashmere and knitwear but lower price products are hurting it is the cheaper stuff which is being hit.

'Clothes still need to have an updated twist. We're not talking about people buying classic garments as such but they are looking for longevity. People are still buying beautiful things, but not the one season wonders any more. They are investing instead in precious skin handbags and shoes and understated, quality bags like Bottega Veneta.

'Costume jewellery is selling very well at the moment, especially expensive items. My strategy going forward? I don't believe in playing it safe and I haven't scrimped on buying.'

What lies behind the design and price of Apple Watch

It has long been argued that the true genius of Apple Computer is to move into a space that already has players and, through its remarkably uniform and polished design aesthetic, come to dominate it in shorter time than was thought possible.

It did this with portable music players, then with mobile phones and then with tablets. As of last week, Apple announced its next target: the watch market.

Some observers of Apple's "Spring Fever" launch of its new watch series thought of the various watch models on offer as being merely wearable computers. Of course, that in itself is a big jump, an almost completely new market with few big name incumbents.

But, in fact, it is a bigger play than that. It is as if Apple had introduced the iPhone into a world without mobiles, where everyone had at most a cordless phone.

Apple doesn't just want knock off bvlgari ring women to create a wearable computing market it wants to take over the existing, multi billion dollar watch market including the high end segment, with its massive margins.

The watch market is ripe for disruption. In effect, three giant holding companies dominate it.

The shoppers who spend here are renowned for their large purchases. Alla Verber, the managing director of Tretyakovsky Proyezd, was reluctant to say how much could pass through the till in any one transaction, but admitted: "$20,000 at one go is common."

One Italian boutique reported an individual purchase of 56,000 by a man. Ms Verber says there has been a rise in interest in shopping among men.

"Two years ago, more than twice as many women shopped than men," she said. "Now it's 50 50, and many are buying for themselves not their wives."

The London hotel scene has never been so buoyant. Traditional grande dame luxury hotels are having to look to their laurels as new or revamped five star properties open almost every month. And there have been interesting openings at the budget end of the market too. Over the past few months I've taken a look at two of the starriest additions to the capital's hotel portfolio: the Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge and the refurbished Caf Royal in Regent Street. And for those on a sub celebrity budget, I've visited the city's newest budget opening, the Qbic Hotel near Brick Lane in east London.

My bathroom was floor to ceiling Carrara marble with underfloor heating and had a really impressive bath gently carved out of a solid block, but I was shocked to discover there was no shower attachment. There is a separate shower, bien sr, but this is one of my cardinal sins of room design: why would anyone think you can't enjoy a bath and wash your hair in the same place?

When it came to the rest of the hotel, the Akasha spa and gym, with a watsu pool for hydra massage treatments, is a soothing retreat. And I was wowed by the Pompadour Suite, an event space for private parties, receptions and weddings. It has been decorated in its original colours, marrons glacs and gold, and can seat 120 for dinner or cater for 200 for drinks and canaps. It is surely one of the prettiest and most dramatic private dining rooms in London. The Grill Room, however striking the restored gilding and cupids, is decked out with clunky velvet furniture, in the wrong shade of pink, which only detracts from the glories of the room itself.

Although the hotel's beautiful historic lobby still opens on to Regent Street, the new main entrance on Air Street disappears into the street furniture. The designer here is the Italian Antonio Citterio. I walked into acres of black marble, relieved by wonderful white flowers in the lobby. I had seen photos of this hotel before my visit and found the overall effect more subtle in the flesh. The palette is certainly monochrome, but more nuanced than you would think. The whole ground floor is daringly dimly lit, and the black leather seating and gorgeous silvered bar were peopled by an unusually beautiful crowd.

All in all, it's extremely glamorous and very New York in its unashamed sybaritic display of precious materials and, I must admit, much more to my taste.

I stayed in the Knightsbridge Suite and I loved the whole experience. The bespoke mahogany wall panels and the thoughtful lighting floor lamps, strip above curtain line, desk lamps, bedside table lights, all conventionally controlled threw the fake Bulgari snake bracelet silver enormous bed, piled high with pillows, into an appealing pool of light.

The restaurant is overseen by Alain Ducasse but serves the kind of Italian food you rarely see outside Italy food good enough to make me want to take my husband, Marcus, there for a treat. They had a month long soft opening to iron out any bugs before they accepted paying guests, and it certainly feels very well established now.

So far so conventional, but there is also a new budget hotel on the block, the Qbic, close to Brick replica bvlgari bracelet price Lane in E1. A bathroom behind the headboard contains a rain shower and glass half screen, lavatory and basin. All the plumbing and electrics are sandwiched between the headboard and the bathroom wall.

The light bulb at the end of the bed, wrapped in garden hose, does, I suppose, at least help to illuminate the room, but the wooden, half baked DIY stepladder with yet more garden hose wrapped around one step as a luggage rack, two unwieldy hangers at the back and a mirror stuck to the top provided the only place to put my stuff in my large 35sqm (377sqft) room.

But if I sound less than impressed, I am giving you the wrong idea: overall, I am completely wowed by the whole project.

The Qbic has only been open a month, so I found it easy to forgive the automatic check in kiosks that weren't working, creating a queue behind the only member of staff in the lobby. Similarly, only one of the two lifts worked when I visited.

As there is no bar or restaurant, all guests' needs are provided via vending machines, which accept only credit cards. As part of Qbic's local and ethical policy, these machines offer locally sourced products, from vacuum packed stews to beers from a brewery only five miles down the road. The bottle of white wine I chose could only be accessed by the manager, charming Josef; the vending machines had yet to be adapted for this particular wine.

These are all glitches that become more significant when you discover that there are only 24 staff to run this behemoth. Obviously, budget hotels must minimise spending on staff, and this depends upon technology doing its bit. I am distrustful of how reliably we can depend upon it.

There is a lovely, open plan seating area, designed so well that you would never believe that it seats 100 people, where free coffee, tea, soup and bread are on offer during the day.

As the coffee stations on each floor were not in place yet, I heroically threw on last night's clothes to get my husband a cup of tea, followed by the "grab bag" that was included in the room price and left outside the door, comprising juice, an apple and a cereal bar. If you want to spend another 7.50, you have a generous buffet from which to help yourself. I did not see anyone policing it, so they may find their belief in guests' honesty severely tested.
